A flexible silicone mould is the difference between hobby casts and shop-quality product — no layer lines, effortless release, hundreds of pours. The usual barrier is tooling: you need a formwork to pour the silicone into. Our free Mould Maker now generates that tooling — a silicone casting jig — for any shape and size, as a print-ready STL.
The jig has four printed parts: an outer shell with a threaded collar, a core in the shape of your final casting with a threaded spigot, a bridge bar that screws down the spigot, and a clamp ring that screws onto the collar and locks the bar to the rim — suspending the core dead-centre, mechanically locked against the buoyancy of the liquid silicone. Pour mixed silicone into the gap between them; when it cures you own a flexible mould of your shape.
Wax pours at candle temperature straight in — silicone shrugs off 80°C. Soap and plaster are cold and easy. For resin, a light release spray extends mould life. For concrete vessels, cast with the mould supported in its shell so the walls stay true, and demould the next day.
A 20A two-part silicone covers candles, soap and resin — Barnes Pinkysil (platinum, 30-minute demould) or SiliCreate TC20 (budget tin-cure) are the common Australian picks, around $40-60 per kg. For concrete or plaster go firmer, 25-30A, so the mould holds its shape under the weight.
The jig designer calculates it live from your exact shape — typically 150-400g of mixed A+B for common sizes, with a 10% margin included. Always mix by weight, not volume.
It's the release vent. Tape it closed before pouring silicone; once cured, peel the tape and a short blast of air from a ball pump pops the silicone free — no prying, no torn moulds.
No — cured silicone releases cleanly from PLA and PETG with no release agent. One caution: platinum-cure silicones can fail to cure against uncured SLA resin prints. Our jigs are FDM-printed, so both silicone types work.
A rigid printed mould works for one-off wax or soap pours, but silicone releases complex shapes effortlessly, leaves no layer lines on the cast, survives hundreds of pours, and handles concrete and food-grade casting (with food-grade silicone) that rigid plastic can't.
Not for moulds this size. Mix slowly, pour a thin stream from high up into the gap, and bubbles mostly shear out on the way down. A quick tap of the jig on the bench settles the rest.
